Food drop

The Tooele Food Drop will take place this Friday, Oct. 9 at the Deseret Peak Complex. Sign-ups will start at 7 a.m. and food will be given out while supplies last. Please bring a driver’s license and proof of separate residence for each family represented in the car. If there are questions, please call Barbara at 882-3898. We look forward to seeing you there.

Annual candlelight vigil

The annual candlelight vigil will be held Thursday, Oct. 22. We will meet at Jana’s Java (402 N. Main, Tooele) at 6:30 p.m. The walk will proceed to Veterans Park. Everyone who has been a survivor of domestic violence, knows someone who is a victim of domestic violence or is interested in learning more about preventing domestic violence is welcome.

Ask a foster parent night

The Utah Foster Care Foundation is holding an “Ask a Foster Parent” night at the Tooele Library on Wednesday, Oct. 14 from 6-7:30 p.m. There are around 63 children in foster care from Tooele County. Without well-trained and supported foster and adoptive families in the Tooele area, these children may be sent to other communities, away from everything and everyone they know. Why should you become a foster/adoptive parent? Because you can.

Blood drive

Free law enforcement workshop

Tooele County Girls Softball

Monday evenings from 5:30-7 p.m. the league will be holding skill building clinics at the Dow James building. Competitive AAU basketball

Family history center fair

The Tooele Family History Center at 751 East 520 North will be having their annual fair Nov. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Forty classes including, researching family names, pedigree software and computer basics will be taught. Traffic checkpoint

On Tuesday, Oct. 20 the Stockton Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies will be conducting an administrative traffic checkpoint on SR-36, Connor Avenue and Clark Street. The purpose of the checkpoint is to check for valid operator licenses, registrations and the use of seat belts, etc.

Tooele City Library activities

Fire safety will be given by the Tooele Fire Department on Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. A special story time will be given on Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. to celebrate Jump Start. This group helps with literacy for low income preschool children. Oct. 10 the library will be closed for Columbus Day.

Library board meeting

A Tooele County Library Board meeting will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m., in the Tooele County Bookmobile Library 429 E. Main, (Grantsville City Hall), Grantsville. Public attendance is invited.

Friends of the Library meeting

The annual membership meeting for the Friends of the Library will be held Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m., in the conference room at the Tooele City Library. Elections will be held and a financial report of the past year will be presented. All members are invited to attend.

Weekly story time

Tooele Jr. High School community council will met Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the TJHS library.

Literacy team

Can you read? Then you can help. If you understand this text you have the power to do something great. We need you to join our literacy team and become a STAR tutor at Settlement Canyon Elementary. We are working to help students who need a little extra reading practice, beyond the regular classroom. Thirty minutes twice a week is all that is required to improve the future of a student. SHS community council

Elections for Stansbury High School’s Community Council will take place at the beginning of the next SHS Community Council meeting on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. in the SHS library. During this meeting, candidates will be nominated and a secret ballot election will be conducted. Positions to be filled with elections are six parent member positions on the SHS Community Council. Halloween-themed poetry

USU Tooele is sponsoring a Halloween-themed poetry contest for all junior high, high school and USU Tooele students. Original poem submissions must be typed. Please include author’s contact information and grade level. Submissions are due by Oct. 12 to sherenahuntsman08@comcast.net. Prizes will be awarded in each division and winners will be asked to read their submission at a poetry reading night at USU Tooele.

Stallion 5K Stampede

Get Spooked at the Stallion 5K Stampede. Everyone is invited to run this inaugural race at Stansbury High School on Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. Costumes for participants are encouraged. Children may run a 1/2 mile race around the track following the 5K. Medals will be awarded to the top runners in select age groups and awards for costumes. Kindergarten readiness workshop

The Tooele Family Center is offering a free six-week workshop for parents and children four years of age and older who are entering kindergarten in the fall of 2010 to help prepare them for school. Parents will receive valuable tips and information on how to work with their child on pre-kindergarten skills and the children will enjoy a fun preschool hour. Basic welding class

Adult Education

Get your high school diploma this year. All classes required for a high school diploma, adult basic education, GED preparation, word processing, drivers’ education and English as a second language are available. Gain computer skills

The Tooele Adult Education Center is offering a beginning class in Microsoft Word XP, Access, Excel, PowerPoint and Windows. The class will be at the Tooele Adult Education Center on Tuesday and Wednesday nights for five weeks beginning Tuesday, Oct. 6, ending Nov. 11, from 6-9 p.m. Adults currently enrolled at the education center pay $30. Community participants pay $60. Seniors, 55 and over pay $55. Call 833-1994. Pre registration required.

English as a Second Language

ESOL conversational classes are held Monday and Thursday from 7-9 p.m. ESOL students may also come anytime the center is open for Individualized study. Registration is $50 per semester. Call 833-1994.

Council of Catholic women breakfast

St. Marguerite’s Council of Catholic Women will be having its monthly breakfast this Sunday, Oct. 11 after the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Mass. All are welcome to come and enjoy a fresh hot breakfast. Cost is $6 for full breakfast and $3 for half breakfast, includes coffee and juice or milk.

Pioneer Valley Chamber Ensemble

Auditions are open for the Pioneer Valley Chamber Ensemble co-directed by Pamela Dale and Betta Nash. The ensemble primarily performs classical music, and rehearses Thursdays 7:30-9:30 p.m. in Tooele. Current need is for alto, tenor, and bass voices; also chamber orchestra players. The First Baptist Church in Tooele is offering an emergency food pantry and clothing closet to meet the needs of our community. Anyone with clothing needs is welcome. Baby foods are now available. N.A.R.F.E. meeting

The Tooele Chapter #1253 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association announces a one-time deviation from our regular meeting for the month of October. Instead of Friday, we will assemble at the Tooele County Emergency Management Auditorium at 3 p.m., Thursday the 8th. We’ll get a briefing on the management operations and emergency preparedness plus a tour of the new facility. This is very important information to help you coordinate your plans for doing your part before, during and after an emergency. Sewing guild

Farm bureau meeting

The annual policy development meeting of the Tooele County Farm Bureau will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Extension Office at 151 N. Main Street in Tooele. All farm bureau members and officers are welcome.

Master Gardener registration

Utah State University Extension is now taking registrations for the 2009 Master Gardener course. This is a comprehensive two-year course, 10 weeks each year, taught by Larry Sagers, USU horticulture specialist and Linden Greenhalgh, Tooele County USU Extension ag agent. The first session of classes start Oct. 14 and goes through March 10, 2010. Classes are held on selected Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the USU Extension Office, 151 N. Main, Room 180. Cost for the course with 40 hours of volunteer time is $110 or $180 for couples. Those who do not want to do volunteer time may register and pay the full tuition of $255. Class size is very limited, so register and pay early. You can get a registration packet at the Extension office. Call the Extension Office at 435-277-2400 for more information.

Tooele County Historical Society

The Tooele County Historical Society will feature Hank Thompson at our Oct. 13 meeting at 7 p.m. His presentation will be about Mormon coins and script. Our meetings are held in the basement of the Pioneer Museum at 47 E. Vine Street, enter at the back door. Guests are welcome. If you would like to be a member our dues are only $5 per year.

Old Lincoln Highway sign

The Tooele County Historical Society has recently made a loan agreement with the Utah State Historical Society to display an old Lincoln Highway sign that was on the border of Utah and Nevada. This unique sign is on display at the Pioneer Museum and can bee seen right after our Tooele County Historical Society meeting on Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.

Historical books available

Tooele County Historical Society’s books will be available to purchase at our Oct. 13 meeting. “The History of Tooele County Volume II” is $25. “The Mining, Smelting, and Railroading in Tooele” is $15, and we also have eight note cards depicting four different pioneer buildings for $4. MOMS Club open house

The MOMS Club of Tooele Valley, local chapter of the international MOMS Club, will be holding their fall celebration open house on Wednesday, Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Pratt Aquatic Center City Park pavilion, 55 N. 200 West, Tooele. Help for gardeners

The USU Master Gardeners are available to help with your gardening problems. The “Diagnostic Clinic” is available from 3-6 p.m. every Wednesday through September at the County Extension office, 151 N. Main St., Tooele.

NRA banquet

Friends of the NRA, a banquet will be held on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Eagle’s Nest. Many prizes will be given away in drawings, raffles and auctions. Proceeds raised will support local grants for youth events, public gun ranges, law enforcement and others. A prime rib and turkey dinner will be available. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Dino Genco from the American Legion, Salt Lake City will be in your area to assist individual Veterans in understanding and applying for VA benefits. This is a free service to all Veterans.
