Neighbors happy that SHS band is now set to abide by county’s early morning noise ordinance

A group of Stansbury Park residents say they’re sleeping better — and longer — now that the Stansbury High School marching band is adhering to a county noise ordinance that stops them from practicing before 7 a.m.

The residents, who live just north of SHS, became frustrated when the sound of pounding drums and other instruments continually filtered through the walls of their homes every weekday morning during the six o’clock hour.

“The general consensus from people was that this was probably just a few people that were bothered by the noise,” said Ryan Willden, who contacted the high school and Tooele County School District officials earlier this month about finding a resolution to the problem. “I don’t think people realized that it was the entire neighborhood that was bothered. Some people were annoyed about it, but they didn’t think there was anything they could do.”

Willden said he never realized that speaking out on the issue would garner so much attention from residents countywide criticizing him and other Stansbury residents for being complainers.

“All we wanted is for the school to have to follow the same ordinance that we all do,” he said. “It’s frustrating that so many people within the community are saying that we are anti-band.”

Regardless, Willden said for over a week now he hasn’t heard the band practice before 7 a.m., as dictated by county code.

“They start practicing at 7 a.m. on the dot and that doesn’t bother me at all,” Willden said. “We hope these changes last through this next year.”

Kami Tripp, who can see the school’s practice field from her front door, said she is also satisfied with the school’s effort to correct the situation.

“The band is now conforming to the ordinance and that’s all we can ask for,” she said.

Tooele County School District Superintendent Terry Linares said the changes were made after a conference between her and SHS Principal Kendall Topham two weeks ago.

“We are working with the Stansbury residents and trying to come to some sort of understanding,” Linares said. “The band is together before 7 a.m., but they aren’t playing [out on the football field] until after 7. I think this situation is a new thing in the community, and the community has been very cooperative in helping us understand it.”

Though bands at Tooele and Grantsville high schools both practice before 7 a.m., Linares said the district hasn’t received complaints from adjacent neighbors. As a result, bands there will continue to practice as scheduled.

“We don’t have problems at other schools,” she said, adding that marching band practice will be winding down for the year by the end of next week as state competitions approach.

Linares said she and other officials are currently discussing a potential plan that will continue to promote good relationships with neighboring residents, like marking the school’s parking lot so marching band practice can coincide with other extracurricular actives during other times of the day. Nothing is set in stone yet, however.

“Hopefully by next year when we get into marching season we will have a plan in place,” Linares said. “We’ll keep trying to figure this out.”

Grow up Stansbury residents! I live right behind Grantsville High and listen to the band practicing every morning starting at 6:00 am. Maybe all you 'high society' Stansbury folk should quit thinking your above hearing a little noise. I'm sure if was your child in the bank it would all be fine. Get out of bed already! Maybe you could schedule your manicure and massage early in the morning so you miss the noise.

It is really funny to me that because there are some residence in Stansbury that like to sleep past 6:30 that everyone in Stansbury is now an Elitist Shmuck. What a bunch of babies??? What a bunch on narrow minded, intolerant jerks that can so easily hate people for wanting to sleep in passed 6:30. So, because they want to sleep and asked the band not to practice until 7:00, they don't support the school?? Wow, nice conclusion jumping there. That area has a lot of starter homes and small families with babies, and some babies can't take the noise. Great if yours could!!! But some can't. Some people work til early morning hours and need to sleep. Stop thinking everyone should be like you and think like you and realize we are different and react and deal with situations differently. Some may not like the band playing that early and that is no reason for me to start hate mongering Stansbury residence.

You stansbury people really need to get a life. Seriously, do you not have anything better to do than sit around and think of things that you could complain about... little things such as early morning band practice. You wanted the school, you need to put up with what comes with it. I'm sure if the roles were reversed and it was football making the noise in the mornings you all would turn the other cheek, and not make one complaint; but because it is the band, you have issue with it. I hope you all can pat yourselves on the back, because you just screwed yourselves over. It seems to me there is more people against this stupid rule, than for it. Where were you when they said they were placing a school by you? Why weren't you there complaining and opposing it? It's a high school for pete's sake, I can assure you there are A LOT more issues ahead of you, than just early morning band practice!!!

All of the comments below clearly indicate a lack of intelligence and respect for the law in Tooele County. If you don't understand it, I'm sure the County Attorney would be more than happy to explain it so that you can understand it better.

As a resident of Stansbury Park I proudly state that I am ashamed of my selfish, self-centered community. It is because of this attitude that we will never go anywhere with our sports programs, arts, or scholastics. It is because of this attitude that Tooele will always beat Stansbury at football. It is because of this attitude that our Marching Band will be last place at every competition. None of the programs will grow because it will inconvenience your lives and mess up your plans.

I find it funny that people just simply say that they want the school “to have to follow the same ordinance that we all do.” Oh please, people are just finding laws that will help them get what they want.

Well, what I want to know is how can we change this so called ordinance. What meeting do I need to attend and what paper do I need to sign to get this ordinance changed? Lets stop talking about it and start doing something about it. There are a least 60 band parents that want this changed and many more supportive community members. Lets get this changed so that people don’t have an excuse to pick on a program that is trying to grow.

My apologies.... Out of the consideration of Stansbury residents and those who have children that take naps during the day, please find another way to let the students know it's time for class instead of having the "bells" go off between classes. Thanks!!!

Seriously people come on now!!!

What a bunch of babies!! I used to live right by the practice field in Tooele with a child I might add and yeah at first it was annoying but after a while you get used to it and kind of tune it out. It's no different than living by train tracks when the train goes chugging by and all of a sudden "woot woot!!"

My opinion is you all wanted the high school so deal with it!! Everyone in Tooele and Grantsville has so can you. Just cause you live in Stansbury, which to some peole consider luxury living, doesn't mean you should get special treatment!!!!

Grow up for crap sakes and be thankful your kids now have the school to attend to and one day enjoy practicing for their extracuricular activities. Next thing you know you'll be complaining that the football games are to late and your kids can't sleep.
