Contest winner

Joe Deavila was last week’s winner of the Tooele Transcript-Bulletin football pick’em. Deavila finished with a 6-2 record along with four others but was closer to the final score of the TCU at BYU game. This week’s contest is already under way with the picks appearing in today’s edition of the paper. Picks can be dropped off at the Transcript office before 2 p.m. Friday or e-mailed to jgordon@tooeletranscript.com.

Junior Jazz

The Tooele Jr. Jazz youth basketball program will hold its annual registration days for the Tooele, Stansbury, Erda, Stockton and Lake Point areas on Nov. 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Nov. 12 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Nov. 14 from 10 .m. to 2 p.m. This year’s registration will be held at Quality Ford on Main Street in Tooele. The Jr. Jazz program provides a fun recreational game experience with opportunities to attend a Utah Jazz game and spend an evening with a Utah Jazz player. Jr. Stallion Basketball

Jr. Stallion Basketball registration is currently taking place. All basketball players (male/female), grades K-8th who attend Stansbury High boundary schools may register. Jr. Stallions will consist of 10 Saturday sessions and is intended to progressively teach individual and team basketball fundamentals. Cost: $50. Archery League

The indoor 3D indoor animal target league at Deseret Peak Complex will start on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. The league is sponsored by Stansbury Oquirrh Bowmen and Tooele County Deseret Peak Complex. The league will continue every Thursday night through February. All level of shooters are invited to participate. For more information call Bryan Warr at (435) 882-6795.

Spies wins series

Ben Spies (Yamaha World Superbike) won the first race and then controlled the situation in race 2 to take his and Yamaha’s first ever World Superbike Championship title in front of an 86,000 crowd in the final round of the series at Portimao, Portugal. Noriyuki Haga (Ducati Xerox), points leader going into the decider, crashed out in race 1, making things easier for the Texan, who was fifth in the second race. Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) took the win in race 2, while Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) and Jonathan Rea (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) were the other podium finishers.

Sportsman permits

Applications for next year’s most prized Utah hunting permits 2010 sportsman permits will be available by Nov. 2. Only Utah residents may apply for sportsman permits. One sportsman permit is offered for each of the following species: Desert bighorn ram, Rocky Mountain bighorn ram, buck deer, buck pronghorn, bull elk, bull moose, hunter’s choice bison, hunter’s choice Rocky Mountain goat, black bear, cougar, sandhill crane and wild turkey. If you draw a sportsman permit, the dates you can hunt vary. But in most cases, they’re longer than the regular season dates. You can also hunt on almost any unit in Utah that’s open to hunting the species you drew a permit for. You can apply for a sportsman permit starting Nov. 2 at wildlife.utah.gov. Applications must be submitted no later than 11 p.m. on Nov. 19 to be entered in the draw for permits. Draw results will be posted by Dec. 10. If you draw a permit, you’ll also receive a letter in the mail.

Utes still 19th

Utah is ranked No. 19 in the latest AP Top 25, right where the Utes were before an overtime win over Air Force. The Utes (6-1, 3-0 Mountain West) held off the Falcons 23-16 on Saturday, coming up with a stop on fourth down on the final play of the game. Utah is home again Saturday against Wyoming. BYU (6-2, 3-1) dropped out of the rankings for the first time this season after a 38-7 loss at home to TCU, which moved up two spots to No. 8. The Cougars have a bye week and are at Wyoming on Nov. 7.
